San Antonio, Texas

March 16th- March 23rd

After two 1-night stays in Tucson, AZ and Van Horn TX, we arrived in San Antonio TX. A few quick highlights from the overnights.

Tucson KOA: Best BBQ on site, hands down! It was incredible and right next to our campsite. Boys had a great time under the desert sky after a long drive.

Van Horn, TX. Big, beautiful Texas sky filled with stars. It was a quiet town and we got a great night sleep after the 2nd day in a row of 6+ hour drives.

Arriving in San Antonio: We were grateful to know we didn’t have to wake up and drive again! We stayed at Blazing Star Resort in San Antonio. It was a large RV park and had great amenities. The boys had a blast on the playground after school each day. We hit the pool and had some great field trips. One in particular, the Alamo! What is great is they had recently studied about the Alamo and were excited to see it. It was not what we had first expected. Driving through the city and then..there it is…the Alamo! Smack in the middle of downtown San Antonio. We had a great time touring it. After the Alamo we went down to the Riverwalk only to find way too many people for the Cass’ comfort. When we got back in the truck to head home, Ryder said: “I never want to go to a city again”! We realized we have become accustomed to the road life and being outdoors. Our preference has become national parks, mountains, rivers, trees, lakes, stars. San Antonio was a stretch, for sure.

We had a great day visiting a town called New Braunfels. We met up with some of my clients who live in Austin for lunch in a town called Greene. We felt at that point we were getting a taste of Texas. Great music around each corner, friendly people and history around us. We had a great day out and finished at a nearby park walking around, looking on as families gathered together for food and fun.

Tornado warning! Our last night, we woke up at 1:00am to extensive lightning which was followed by a hailstorm Meghan and I had never experienced. I didn’t think much of the lightning but thought it was unusual that it just kept coming every 3-4 seconds. When the hail started coming down and sounded like it was going to breakthrough our trailer, I got a bit nervous. One of our sons came into our bed and asked if everything was ok. Something didn’t feel right in my spirit as the hail kept pounding down. I grabbed my phone only to find out there was a tornado warning 10 miles away from us! I had talked to a few of my friends from the south and midwest and got some tornado insight before the trip. Bottom line is I thought we were good to go in San Antonio. To my knowledge, there wasn’t a lot of tornado history in the area. I guess I was wrong! Anyhow, there was no tornado that touched down but boy, we were a bit nervous at the time.

I’ll remember our bike rides around the campground, playing with the boys in the “yard” and just being family in a new place. It was nice to be on the road again. Our 1st extended stay of our 2 month adventure out!

  1. Just outside Van Horn,Tx. Is where a Greyhound bus front ended Ben Hogan and Valerie. Doctors weren’t sure he’d survive or walk. Thirteen months later he won the US Open at Riviera. Perseverance. Almost better than skill. Travel safely. Best jhales
